Bahu Laweyan:
Javanese Myth that Becomes the Soul of the Film Perempuan Pembawa Sial
A dark legend from Java will soon hit the big screen, combining love, curses, and karma into a mysterious horror film.
Perempuan Pembawa Sial / The Unlucky Woman , the latest film by director Fajar Nugros, who returns to horror after the success of “Inang” (2022), brings to life the ancient myth of Bahu Laweyan, a deadly curse that is rarely explored in Indonesian cinema.
*The Bahu Laweyan Curse: Between Love and Death*
In Javanese folklore, Bahu Laweyan is a birthmark the size of a coin on a woman’s left shoulder.
This mark is not just any mark, but a symbol of a curse.
Women who have it will always be followed by misfortune, where every man who marries them will die tragically.
It is said that marrying seven times will lift the curse.
The origin of the curse is also dark. In the 18th century, King Pakubuwono II of the Hadiningrat Palace was furious when a female batik artisan from Laweyan refused his request to borrow a horse and live in the palace area.
As revenge, the king cursed all women in Laweyan so that their husbands would die tragically.
Mirah: A Woman Haunted by Her Past
In “The Unlucky Woman”, the audience will follow the story of Mirah (played by Raihaanun), a newlywed woman whose life turns into a nightmare when her husband dies tragically shortly after their marriage.
The villagers ostracize her, labeling her as unlucky, and persecute her without mercy.
However, Mirah begins to suspect that this is not just a coincidence.
She believes she is a victim of Bahu Laweyan, a curse that may have been passed down from a dark past.
On her journey, Mirah meets Bana (Morgan Oey), the owner of a simple food stall who accepts her without fear.
Slowly, love begins to grow between them, but every touch could mean death. The question is, will their love be able to defy the curse? Or will they become the next victims?
