Come and See Pictures, the production house behind the block, has announced the cast for its upcoming film, “The Dark Legend of Malin Kundang.”
Directed by Kevin Rahardjo and Rafki Hidayat, this film promises to bring a fresh take on the classic Indonesian legend, with a blend of drama, mystery, and thriller elements.
A Star-Studded Cast
The film boasts an impressive cast, including Rio Dewanto, Faradina Mufti, Vonny Anggraini, Nova Eliza, Jordan Omar, Gambit Saifullah, and Sulthan Hamonangan. Rio Dewanto and Faradina Mufti will play the lead roles of Alif and Nadine, respectively. This marks the first time the two actors will be starring together in a film. For Rio Dewanto, this film is a reunion with director Joko Anwar, after their previous collaborations in “Modus Anomali” (2012) and “Gundala” (2019). Faradina Mufti also previously worked with Joko Anwar on “Siksa Kubur” (2024).
A Fresh Take on a Classic Legend
“The Dark Legend of Malin Kundang” is set in a modern-day context, with Alif, a micro-artist, struggling to come to terms with his past after a near-death experience. When his mother arrives from the village, Alif’s world is turned upside down as he begins to question his identity and the truth about his past. The film’s script is written by Joko Anwar, Aline Djayasukmana, and Rafki Hidayat, promising a gripping narrative that explores themes of identity, family, and the complexities of human relationships.
A Promising Directorial Debut
Kevin Rahardjo and Rafki Hidayat make their feature film directorial debut with “The Dark Legend of Malin Kundang.” Both directors have showcased their talent in short films, with Kevin producing and Rafki writing and directing. Their previous collaboration on the short film “Parasomnia” demonstrates their ability to craft compelling stories that captivate audiences.
International Recognition
The film has already gained international recognition, being selected for the Marche du Film at the Cannes International Film Festival 2025, where it will be represented by Barunson E&A as the world sales agent. For international release, the film will be titled “Smothered.”
