Europe on Screen 2025: Celebrating 25 Years of Cinematic Exchange

with Special Screenings at Institut français d’Indonésie (IFI) Venues Across Indonesia

Indonesia’s Longest-Running Foreign Film Festival Marks a Milestone with a Strong French Presence

JAKARTA – The European Union’s annual film festival, Europe on Screen (EoS), returns for its 25th edition from 13–22 June 2025.

This silver anniversary not only marks a major cultural milestone for the festival – the second longest running festival after Festival Sinema Prancis – but also highlights the growing partnership between European countries and Indonesia’s cultural scene.

As part of its continued support to Europe on Screen, the French embassy – Institut français d’Indonésie (IFI) is proud to provide screening venues in Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, and Surabaya, alongside Alliance française (AF) in Bali and Medan.

Europe on Screen is present throughout the archipelago thanks to the French Embassy cultural network in 6 cities.

Among the wide selection of European films, two standout French titles will exemplify the strength and diversity of contemporary French cinema.

French Films in the Spotlight

Lads (France, 2024)

Directed by Julien Menanteau

A dynamic debut feature offering a raw and visceral journey into the competitive world of horse racing. Lads follows Ethan (portrayed by rising star Marco Luraschi), a troubled teenager navigating a second chance as a lad (stable boy) while grappling with his father’s gambling debts and a past of juvenile delinquency. With electrifying race sequences and a powerful emotional arc, the film is an ode to resilience and the unspoken bond between humans and animals.

Rosalie (France, 2023) Directed by Stéphanie Di Giusto

Inspired by the real-life story of Clémentine Delait, Rosalie paints a luminous and poignant portrait of a bearded woman in 19th-century France.

Played by the magnetic Nadia Tereszkiewicz, Rosalie challenges societal norms and her husband’s prejudice, ultimately transforming a quiet village café and the hearts of those around her. With stunning period detail and a message of self-acceptance, this is a film that celebrates difference and defiance with grace.

These films are part of the IFI’s ongoing mission to promote French cinema and encourage intercultural exchange through collaborative festivals like Europe on Screen.

A Vibrant Festival Lineup

This year’s festival features 55 curated films from 27 European countries, including a bold and inclusive selection with over 50% directed by women, reaffirming EoS’s role as a platform for diverse voices and emerging talent.

In addition, the Indonesian short film retrospective From Locarno to Venice pays tribute to local filmmakers who have reached international acclaim.

The Opening Film is Circusboy – Zirkuskind (Germany, 2025), a heartfelt docu-drama about a child growing up in a travelling circus, while the Closing Film is the emotionally charged The Boy with Pink Pants (Italy, 2024), inspired by a true story of resilience and identity.

The Short Film Pitching Project (SFPP) also returns this year, supporting a new generation of Indonesian filmmakers, with a record 373 submissions, including entries from abroad – a testament to the festival’s growing international reach.
