Dee Lestari Shares Emotional Reflections on the Musical Adaptation

Adding a special highlight, Dee Lestari, the author of the Perahu Kertas novel, attended and delivered special appearances during the January 30 and 31, 2026 performances. She expressed her heartfelt reflections:
“Perahu Kertas has traveled a very long journey—from the mind, to the page, to the screen, and now to the musical stage. The story of Kugy and Keenan has transformed into something I never imagined before. This journey has taught me that dreams, when patiently nurtured, will always find their way to manifest. I hope this musical version touches more hearts and inspires audiences to dare to reignite their dreams.”
A Story of Art, Dreams, and Emotional Crossroads
On stage, Perahu Kertas: The Musical encapsulates the journey of Kugy and Keenan, two individuals born with artistic souls who must navigate internal struggles in pursuit of their dreams.
Kugy is an imaginative dreamer who creates her own world through stories and words, while Keenan—intelligent and artistic—expresses his imagination through canvases and colors. Their paths intersect in a life journey filled with choices, dreams, and emotions that are not always easy to articulate.
A Collaborative Fusion of Music, Literature, and Theater
Produced by Billy Gamaliel, Eunike Elisaveta, and Chriskevin Adefrid, the musical unites music, literature, and theater into a powerful stage experience rich with emotion and energy.
Billy Gamaliel, who also serves as Program Manager of Indonesia Kaya, stated:
“Beyond adapting a beloved novel into a musical theater production, this work brings forward rich imaginations and presentations that delight the eyes, ears, and most importantly, the heart. After one and a half years of preparation, we hope Perahu Kertas: The Musical not only entertains but also fosters greater appreciation for performing arts and continues to contribute to the growth of Indonesia’s musical theater ecosystem—reminding us that dreams are always worth fighting for.”
Direction, Choreography, and Emotional Storytelling
Written by Widya Arifianti, the musical goes beyond a love story, exploring themes of self-discovery, confronting reality, and embracing life’s choices. The narrative unfolds through relationships with family and friends, illustrating that life’s journey is rarely linear, yet always offers the chance to find one’s way back.
Directed and choreographed by Venytha Yoshiantini, the production translates the story into a stage language driven by movement and emotional rhythm. Through choreography and carefully designed blocking, Kugy and Keenan’s journey is crafted as an experience that is not only told—but deeply felt.
Cast, Creative Team, and Commitment to Young Talent
For the cast, this musical is also a personal journey. Alya Syahrani, who portrays Kugy, shared:
“Kugy grows through her encounters with many people and life choices. Her relationships with Keenan, Remi, Noni, and those around her teach her to understand dreams, reality, and herself. This story shows how people change through interaction, conflict, and support. I hope audiences see this journey as a reflection that self-understanding often comes through the relationships we experience.”
The production involves more than 250 individuals, including 38 performers, 20 core creative team members, musicians, crew, and production staff. Among the cast, 13 performers are young talents from the Ruang Kreatif Intensif Musikal Budaya program, while three performers come from the Trinity Incubation Program, reinforcing the production’s commitment to nurturing Indonesia’s next generation of performing artists.
To maintain performer stamina and ensure consistent performance quality, an alternate cast system is applied on February 3, 4, 10, and 11, 2026 at 7:30 PM WIB, with additional swing performers from Swargaloka.
