Ghost in the Cell, the latest film written and directed by acclaimed Indonesian filmmaker Joko Anwar, is officially scheduled to premiere in Indonesian cinemas on April 16, 2026. The film marks the first theatrical release of the year from Come and See Pictures.
Blending horror and comedy, Ghost in the Cell has already gained international attention after being selected for the Forum section of the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) 2026. The film will have its world premiere in Berlin during the festival, which runs from February 12 to 22, 2026.
Joko Anwar Teases a Carefully Crafted Film
Joko Anwar expressed his excitement about the upcoming release and the film’s journey from festival screenings to cinemas.
“We can’t wait to present the latest Come and See Pictures film, Ghost in the Cell, which was carefully developed with an exceptional Indonesian cast and crew. Star-Studded Cast Across Generations
Ghost in the Cell features an ensemble cast of some of Indonesia’s most respected actors, including Abimana Aryasatya, Bront Palarae, Danang Suryonegoro, Endy Arfian, Lukman Sardi, Mike Lucock, Yoga Pratama, Morgan Oey, Aming, Kiki Narendra, Rio Dewanto, Tora Sudiro, Arswendy Bening Swara, and many others. The film also introduces newcomer Magistus Miftah.
The diverse cast brings depth and energy to the film’s unique mix of dark humor and supernatural elements, a signature style often associated with Anwar’s filmmaking.
Acquired by Renowned German Distributor Plaion Pictures
Ahead of its Indonesian release, Ghost in the Cell has secured an important international milestone. The film has been officially acquired by Germany-based distributor Plaion Pictures, paving the way for theatrical releases in German-speaking territories.
Producer Tia Hasibuan described the acquisition as a proud moment for the production team.
“It is an honor for us that Ghost in the Cell has been acquired by Plaion Pictures, a distributor known for handling award-winning films from around the world. We hope the film will also receive a warm response from international audiences.”
Plaion Pictures is known for distributing globally acclaimed titles such as Parasite, Titane, Anatomy of a Fall, and The Whale. In 2026, the company also acquired Sentimental Value, the Oscar-nominated film by Joachim Trier.
